  環境工程學與環境水質學專家。籍貫河北徐水。1958年畢業于哈爾濱工業大學。1984-1985年瑞士水資源與水污染控制研究所訪問研究學者。1995年當選為中國工程院院士。現任中國科學院生態環境研究中心研究員、學術委員會主任。

  開拓我國環境水質學領域,建立"環境水質學國家重點實驗室"。先后從事薊運河汞污染,湘江鎘污染,鄱陽湖銅污染等重金屬形態、評價及治理研究。參加中國工程院全國及西北水資源戰略研究。在我國率先研究無機高分子絮凝理論和絮凝劑,主持建立聚合氯化鋁現代生產廠,創立穩定化聚合氯化鐵工藝。廣泛開展微界面水質過程和表面絡合計算模式,吸附絮凝理論,高效水處理工藝技術,有機有毒物吸附及控制,環境納米材料生態效應等研究。主持完成多項國家及國際合作研究項目,獲國家自然科學二等獎和科技進步二等獎,何梁何利獎及美國SCI經典論文獎等多次獎項。先后發表專著及論文300余篇。培養研究生50余名。
